Press Release 06/28/2021
Dear Friends and Colleagues
To conclude the 2020/21 season, the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch presents an online film version of the piece Schlafende Frau (Sleeping Woman) by the choreographer and member of the ensemble Rainer Behr.
Deeply influenced by decades of collaboration with Pina Bausch, Rainer Behr never dances, thinks or researches alone, but experiences the slow emergence of the piece together with the dancers as they dance. It is an intuitive summoning of the origins of the Tanztheater Wuppertal and a revelation of the abundance of answers that can arise from a single question.
Working closely with Susanne Stehle (costumes), Michael Simon (stage and lighting) and Andreas Eisenschneider (music), the Wuppertal ensemble explores the theme of dissolution in this new production by Rainer Behr. Taking the incremental changes in the signs of our times as their choreographic starting point, they set out on an adventurous expedition where they encounter an endangered world. The shocking realisation that things are irreversible is palpable in the sensuous and high-octane dances.
Cast: Emma Barrowman, Andrey Berezin, Jonathan Fredrickson, Blanca Noguerol Ramírez, Milan Nowoitnick Kampfer, Nazareth Panadero, Julie Shanahan, Ekaterina Shushakova, Julie Anne Stanzak, Julian Stierle, Christopher Tandy, Stephanie Troyak, Tsai-Chin Yu
The film version was developed in close collaboration with creative producer Horst Wegener (Wupperwerft) and his team.
