Bernd Uwe Marszan
studied dance at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen under the direction of Pina Bausch. She invited him to join the Tanztheater Wuppertal as a guest dancer for several productions while he was still a student. In 1988, he received the dance award of the Josef-und-Else-Classen Foundation for outstanding achievements in classical and modern dance. After graduating, he continued his studies with Prof. Jean Cébron for one year, obtaining a Master’s degree in modern dance (Jooss-Leeder Technique) and choreography. From 1989 to 2001 he danced as a soloist with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Until Pina Bausch’s death in 2009 he returned regularly to perform as a guest dancer in several productions.
In 2000, he founded the process-oriented forum KÖRPERTEXTE, a platform for visual and performing artists from the international arts scene who were interested in exploring the language of the body. Its focus was on developing dance and theatre pieces, performance art and choreographic installations. Within this international network, Marszan collaborated with festivals, theatres and dance houses in Germany and abroad. He also choreographed for the municipal theatres in Dresden, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal.
In April 2013, he passed the state exam in Physiotherapy. After working with the Tanztheater Wuppertal on a freelance basis for several years, he took over the management of the ensemble’s physiotherapy department in March 2019.
