Jonathan Fredrickson

Jonathan Fredrickson

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1984, Jonathan Fredrickson was introduced to dance with Ballet Folklorico classes at the age of nine when he was at school. Through his choice of a performing arts elementary school and later high school, his way into the performing arts was predetermined. The Texan moved to Los Angeles to attend the California Institute of the Arts, where he received a BFA for choreography and dance performance in 2006.
An engagement followed seamlessly: Jonathan Fredrickson moved to New York for the Limón Dance Company. He stayed in New York for five years and then moved to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where he also stayed for five years. Through a Limón colleague, the dancer got in touch with Lutz Förster, then artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, and was invited to audition in New York. “I've always admired Pina Bausch's work. For me it combines a lot of things that I always wanted to do.” When the offer came from Wuppertal, he felt that the opportunity should not be missed. So he changed continents in 2015 and moved to Wuppertal.
It had been positive for him that he was already 31 years old and had some experience. “The Limón Dance Company had prepared me well for Wuppertal”, he says. The work of José Limon is also about exploring where a movement comes from, what triggers it, as with Pina Bausch. Jonathan Fredrickson, who sees himself not only as a dancer but as a creative artist, has choreographed in Wuppertal as part of Underground series and in this season also for Hubbard Street Dance. He plans to develop more of his own works in the future.
