Press Release 19.03.2019

Ladies and Gentlemen,

the premiere of the restaging of Pina Bausch´s piece Er nimmt sie an der Hand und führt sie in das Schloß, die anderen folgen (He Takes Her By The Hand And Leads Her Into The Castle, The Others Follow) will take place at Wuppertal Opera House, Friday 17 May at 19.30, world-premiere April 22.,1978 at Schauspielhaus Bochum

Further performances 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25 and 26 May

The ambitious restaging of the work, not performed for twenty-nine years, sees the fulfilment of a wish long held by the ensemble and forms the high-point of the Tanztheater Wuppertal’s forty-fifth season. The piece was created as a co-production with Schauspielhaus Bochum and demonstrates the new approach Pina Bausch took early in her oeuvre. Theatre director Peter Zadek had invited Pina Bausch to create her version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Searching for a new visual and physical language Pina Bausch began asking her performers associative questions, a working method which was to determine all future pieces by the Tanztheater Wuppertal.

The restaging was directed by Josephine Ann Endicott and Hans Dieter Knebel, both members of the original cast for the 1978 world premiere, assisted by Bénédicte Billiet. With Michael Carter / Julian Stierle, Jonathan Fredrickson, Breanna O´Mara / Stephanie Troyak, Julie Shanahan, Oleg Stepanov, Michael Strecker / Douglas Letheren, Tsai-Wei Tien.

We are especially pleased that for the two acting roles, we have been able to cast two powerful theatre and film actors. Johanna Wokalek will play the role originally performed by Mechthild Großmann. She has worked with international theatre directors such as Luc Bondy, Andrea Breth, Peter Zadek and performed in features films. One of her greatest recent appearances was the title role in Sönke Wortmann’s historical drama Pope Joan. The part originally performed by Vitus Zeplichal will be played by Maik Solbach. He has been cast in countless roles in Germany’s major theatres and has worked with artists such as William Forsythe, Katie Mitchell and Karin Beier. Alongside his stage appearances, he is regularly seen in television productions.
